Why can't I compile the simplest TeX file of only 6 lines?

\documentclass{article} \usepackage[adobefonts]{ctex} \usepackage[os=win]{menukeys} \usepackage{listings} \begin{document} \end{document} The simplest TeX file above cannot be compiled with xelatex, the errors are: (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/adjustbox/adjustbox.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/xkeyval/xkeyval.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/xkeyval/xkeyval.tex)) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/adjustbox/adjcalc.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/adjustbox/trimclip.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/collectbox/collectbox.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/adjustbox/tc-xetex.def)) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/ifoddpage/ifoddpage.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/varwidth/varwidth.sty)) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/relsize/relsize.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/catoptions/catoptions.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/oberdiek/kvoptions.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/ltxcmds.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/kvsetkeys.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/infwarerr.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/etexcmds.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/generic/oberdiek/ifluatex.sty))))) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/listings/listings.sty (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/listings/lstmisc.sty) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/latex/listings/listings.cfg)) (/opt/local/texlive/2014/texmf-dist/tex/xelatex/xecjk/xeCJK-listings.sty ! One font by default a bit smaller using fontspec

I have to typeset a few Hebrew words in a document, and for this I use xelatex with polyglossia and fontspec (MWE at the bottom). The problem is that this font has a larger x-height than the font I use for the rest of the document (the default). So it looks like this: The distance […]

Is there a way to include the document creation time with XeTeX?

I’m currently using \isodate{\today} \currenttime} to include an aproximate creation time for a XeTeX document. This is “good enough” but doesn’t include the timezone. In pdflatex the creation time of a document can be included with \pdfcreationdate, is there an equivalent command that works with XeTeX?

How to set font when using greek characters?

I have tried this with the font “Charis SIL”, “Times” and “Times New Roman”: \documentclass[a5paper]{article} %\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} %\usepackage[LGR,T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[greek,british]{babel} \usepackage{fontspec} \setmainfont{Charis SIL} \begin{document} This is a simple test. \textgreek{ὅθεν ὤφειλεν κατὰ πάντα}. And orgé as well. Without slash textgreek ἱλαστήριον (hilasterion) \end{document} The é appears in the PDF when using xelatex, but the greek does not, […]

Fontspec: Bold Small Caps with Alegreya Font

I’m using the Alegreya font in XeLaTeX and, after scouring the fontspec documentation, I can’t figure out how to specify the bold small caps font (not to mention the italic small caps). I feel like the answer is right under my nose, I just can’t quite find it. The font definitely has bold small caps, […]

ß becomes SS in bibliography with BibLaTeX/Biber and XeLaTeX

Background: I am using BibLaTeX, Biber and XeLaTeX to write a book that contains a bibliography. The bib-file is encoded as UTF-8 and contains “special” characters such as umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and sharp s (ß). Problem: When I compile the document, the “ß” are replaced by “SS” in the bibliography, as in the following: […]

Several questions about migrating to XeLaTeX

I am using LaTeX for years now but I am considering to migrate to XeLaTeX. The main reason for this change is the babel package which change a lot the layout of my documents according to my language (French). For example, the itemize environment in LaTeX/Babel (in French) is completely different from the original (LaTeX/Babel/English). […]

Does anything like a “pdfXeLaTeX” exist?

I have generally been using pdfLaTeX to typeset my documents. I recently heard about XeTeX which supposedly is the same thing, except has better support for things like unicode and fonts. Is there a tool which operates as XeTeX does but which allows a direct PDF translation, rather than going through intermediate stages?
